Did you know? This species first developed in South-America about 60-65.000.000 years ago, reaching a high rate of variety due to the lack of any competitors. Their vertebral joints have extra articulations unlike other mammals. On its hunting territory it keeps visiting anthills from time to time, but always using different ones in order to avoid the extinction of the given anthill. Watch it! Their lower and their upper jaw are highly elongated and agglutinated like a beak due to their specific way of eating (ant- and termites eater). Their tongue can be 60 cms, it can catch termites very fast with that, hundreds of them in a few minutes. On its forelegs, there are 3 nails which are especially huge, and with them it can disrupt hard termite nests or scrape the bark. Occasionally, if necessary, it can use these nails as a dangerous weapon. It has rough and long hairs which is necessary due to its low body temperature resulting from its slow metabolism. It uses its tail as a blanket during metabolic processes to hold its body temperature. It was named after its mane on its neck and on its back, which can be ruffled in case of excitement. Habitat: Solitary animal, it lives in pampas, in grasslands. Spread: It is solely native to Center and South America. Its distribution area can be found from Belize and from Guatemala to the northern part of Argentina.
