World Penguin Day at the Győr Zoo

con_email

On April 25, penguins are celebrated worldwide, and we wouldn’t want to miss out on this special occasion. One of the most popular residents of the Győr Zoo are the African penguins, who captivate visitors of all ages with their playful behavior and distinctive appearance.

The African penguin—named after the distinctive pattern around its eyes that resembles a pair of glasses—is native to the coasts of South Africa.
These birds are excellent swimmers and spend a large part of their time in the water, where they hunt for fish. Although many people associate penguins with cold climates, this species thrives in warmer environments.

At the Győr Zoo, we place special emphasis on providing our animals with the most natural environment possible. Our penguins have access to a spacious pool and a dry resting area, where visitors can observe their daily lives up close. Our penguin walk is a popular attraction,
as the birds are especially active and curious during these times.

World Penguin Day is not only a celebration but also an opportunity to raise awareness. In the wild, African penguins are considered endangered: habitat loss, overfishing, and environmental pollution pose serious threats to their survival. Zoos—including Győr Zoo—play an important role in species conservation and education.

Visit us on this special day and discover the fascinating world of our penguins up close!
