- The cockatiel is the most common species of parrot that can be kept in captivity, along with the budgeriga.
- It does not like closed forests, preferring open areas. It has a quick, steady, sometimes acrobatic sweep.
- It has a brownish-grey base, red or orange auricles and a lemon-yellow bob. The most common colour variation is grey-white-yellow with a small red spot under the eye. That's what makes cockatiels a bit funny-looking, it's like they've got a little bit of blushing cheeks.
