Birds and Trees Day
May 10th is celebrated in Hungary as "Madarak és Fák Napja" (Birds and Trees Day), drawing attention to the important role that birds and trees play in maintaining the balance of nature. The tradition dates back more than one hundred years, the first celebration of this kind was initiated in 1902 by the ornithologist István Chernel.

In memory of Dr. Birutė Mary Galdikas – The Guardian Angel of Orangutans
The scientific community learned with deep sorrow of the passing of Dr. Birutė Mary Galdikas, who died at the age of 80. The world-renowned anthropologist and primatologist of Lithuanian origin devoted her life to the study and protection of orangutans, and through her work left a lasting impact on the fields of nature conservation and ethology.

Our farmyard has opened its gates

Our ships are resting
Due to the prolonged cold weather, the water surface has frozen, so our ships operating between the city center harbor and the industrial canal (Zoo) are temporarily not running.
Our smallest residents have arrived – newborn porcupines at the Győr Zoo
The Győr Zoo family has grown with more tiny newcomers! After our meerkats and capybaras, newborn Indian crested porcupines have now arrived as well—and they’ve already stolen the hearts of their keepers.

What do animals do in cold weather?
Many people think that the zoo “sleeps” in winter, but in fact exciting life continues in the enclosures and animal houses even during the cold months. The residents of the Xantus János Zoo in Győr adapt to the cooler weather in different ways depending on the species—just as they would in the wild.

World Penguin Day at the Győr Zoo
On April 25, penguins are celebrated worldwide, and we wouldn’t want to miss out on this special occasion. One of the most popular residents of the Győr Zoo are the African penguins, who captivate visitors of all ages with their playful behavior and distinctive appearance.
World Squirrel Day
World Squirrel Day is celebrated every year on January 21, thanks to an initiative launched in 2001,
with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of squirrels, their role in the ecosystem, and nature conservation.
