Birds and Trees Day
May 10th is celebrated in Hungary as "Madarak és Fák Napja" (Birds and Trees Day), drawing attention to the important role that birds and trees play in maintaining the balance of nature. The tradition dates back more than one hundred years, the first celebration of this kind was initiated in 1902 by the ornithologist István Chernel.
The Xantus János Zoo is not only dedicated to presenting unique animal species, but also plays an active role in nature conservation and environmental education. Every year, our rescue center receives numerous injured or weakened wild birds. In recent months, we have participated in the treatment and rehabilitation of several injured birds, including nestlings that had fallen from their nests and birds of prey injured in accidents. Our goal in every case is to help recovered animals return to their natural habitat.
Why are birds important?
Birds are considered the “indicators” of nature. If many different bird species live in an area, it usually reflects a healthy environment.
Birds help control insect populations, disperse seeds, and play an essential role in maintaining ecosystems.
A single swallow can consume several thousand insects per day, while woodpeckers help protect trees by feeding on harmful insects living under the bark. However, many bird species are finding it increasingly difficult to locate suitable habitats due to urbanization and deforestation.
What should we pay attention to during spring and early summer?
During this period, many birds are nesting, so it is especially important to act carefully and respectfully toward nature.
- do not disturb nests or chicks
- young birds found sitting on the ground are often not abandoned — their parents may be nearby teaching them to fly
- do not break tree branches or leave litter behind while hiking
- dogs should be kept on a leash in natural areas
- if possible, place bird feeders, bird baths, or nesting boxes in your garden
