World Squirrel Day

con_email

World Squirrel Day is celebrated every year on January 21, thanks to an initiative launched in 2001,
with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of squirrels, their role in the ecosystem, and nature conservation.

In autumn, squirrels eagerly collect hazelnuts, walnuts, and pine cones, which they store for the colder months.
However, they do not rediscover every hiding place—new trees often sprout from these “forgotten” seeds.

The role of squirrels in nature

  • they help with seed dispersal,
  • they contribute to maintaining healthy forest ecosystems,
  • their presence is one indicator of a habitat’s good condition

Although we often see them as cute and friendly animals, they are wild species with their own natural behavior and living space.

What can we do for squirrels?

World Squirrel Day is a great opportunity for us to take action for them:

  • plant native trees and shrubs,
  • preserve natural habitats in our gardens,
  • do not feed them processed foods,
  • watch out for them on roads, especially near parks and forests

A small animal with a big significance

The presence of squirrels is one of the clearest signs of a healthy forest. On World Squirrel Day,
let us pause for a moment, observe them, and reflect on the important role they play in the cycle of nature.
