Our smallest residents have arrived – newborn porcupines at the Győr Zoo
The Győr Zoo family has grown with more tiny newcomers! After our meerkats and capybaras, newborn Indian crested porcupines have now arrived as well—and they’ve already stolen the hearts of their keepers.

The newborns belong to the species known as the Indian crested porcupine, which has many unique characteristics. Their quills are modified hairs,
and they do not “shoot” them as many believe—however, if they feel threatened, the quills can easily become lodged in an attacker. The young are born relatively well developed, and their quills are soft at first, hardening within a short time.
As they are still very small and sensitive, they are currently being raised behind the scenes in a calm environment. The first days are especially important for them: this is when they grow stronger and learn the basic skills they will need later on. Our keepers are monitoring them continuously and doing everything they can to ensure they develop under the best possible conditions.
At our zoo, it is always an exciting time when new arrivals are born, and it brings us particular joy that so many species are part of this “baby boom.” When you visit us next, don’t forget to stop by the meerkats and capybaras as well—there’s something happening everywhere right now!
