in large colonies, it nests on mud mounds, in which it lays 1 egg and then incubates it for 28-31 days. The chicks are nest-leavers, and when they hatch they immediately take to the water

- When disturbed, it gains the necessary speed for flight with a loud noise, treading water and flying with its neck outstretched. It sleeps on one leg with its head pressed against its body.
- The female is smaller and lighter than the male. Its body and legs are slender and long. The beak is pink, the tip is jet black.
