After 275-315 days of gestation, the female usually gives birth to a single calf. The calfreaches sexual maturity at two to three years of age. The life expectancy of the species is around 20 years.

• It has a black and sparse coat and white "tights". White patches may also appear on the faceand throat. Young individuals are woolly-haired and brownish in colour. Their flat horns grow to 20-40 centimetres long
• Anoas look like dwarf versions of the water buffalo. They are presumably dwarfedbecause they lived on an island, which, although large, can only support a limited number of individuals
