Our meerkat family has grown by three pups

We are happy to share some wonderful news: three meerkat pups were recently born at our zoo, bringing the already lively group to a total of 12 members

The curious little pups are already playfully exploring their enclosure—sometimes running around with their older siblings, sometimes digging tunnels, or basking in the sunshine. Visitors can now observe the family’s everyday life up close.

Meerkats are highly social animals. In their natural habitat, the desert regions of southern Africa, they live in large colonies that can consist of 20–50 individuals. These communities follow a strict hierarchy, where the dominant pair is responsible for raising the pups, while the other members also actively take part in caring for the family.

They are true survivors: attentive sentinels that are always on the lookout and warn the group of approaching danger. With their special claws they skillfully dig tunnels where they can find shelter from the heat and from predators. Their communication is also remarkably complex—they keep in touch within the colony through whistles, chirps, and various vocal signals.

If you would like to meet our newest arrivals, visit the Győr Zoo, where you can follow the daily life of this little family up close!
