What do animals do in cold weather?
Many people think that the zoo “sleeps” in winter, but in fact exciting life continues in the enclosures and animal houses even during the cold months. The residents of the Xantus János Zoo in Győr adapt to the cooler weather in different ways depending on the species—just as they would in the wild.

Cold-loving species
Many animals feel especially comfortable during the winter season. Mammals with thick fur are often more active at this time—they move around more, play more, and frequently display more spectacular behavior than in summer. For them, the cold represents a natural environment, which is why visitors can often observe them at their best in winter.
Tropical animals keeping warm
Species from warmer climates retreat to heated indoor areas when the cold sets in. These animal houses are designed to provide the appropriate temperature, humidity, and a calm environment. During this time, visitors can get to know these animals up close in sheltered, indoor spaces.
Winter rest and adaptation
Some species move less during the cold months, switch to a more energy-efficient lifestyle, or take longer rest periods. Zoo keepers consider this when planning daily routines, feeding, and enrichment activities.
Changed diet
In winter, many animals’ diets also change: they are given more energy-rich food to help maintain their body temperature. Feeding is always tailored to the needs of each species and carried out under strict professional supervision.
Caring even in the cold
Even during the winter season, zoo staff pay special attention to the animals’ well-being. They ensure the winter safety of the enclosures, keep drinking water free from freezing, and monitor the animals continuously on a daily basis.
Worth visiting even in winter
The zoo in winter offers a special atmosphere: a quieter environment, active animals, and indoor exhibition areas await visitors. Even at this time, the zoo in Győr provides engaging and enriching programs for all ages.
