World Recycling Day
On March 18, we celebrate Global Recycling Day, which highlights the fact that waste is not necessarily garbage – in many cases, it is a valuable resource that can be given new life with proper handling. This mindset is playing an increasingly important role in the daily operations of zoos as well.
Zoos – including the Xantus János Zoo – are not only focused on showcasing animals and conservation, but also on operating sustainably and setting an example for visitors about environmentally conscious living.
New life for everyday objects
Many tools and structures in zoos are made using recycled or repurposed materials. Old logs can become climbing and resting areas, used barrels can be turned into toys, and ropes can be fashioned into agility elements for the animals. These solutions are not only environmentally friendly but also enrich the animals’ environment and help maintain their natural behaviors.
Reducing waste in everyday life
Green waste, such as branches or leaves from pruning, often ends up in animal enclosures, serving as hiding spots or play items. Also some food scraps are composted, returning them to the natural cycle.
Raising Awareness
Zoos also play an important role in drawing attention to environmentally conscious choices—such as selective waste collection or reducing plastic use—which have a direct impact on the natural habitats of wildlife. Plastic ending up in the oceans, waste accumulating in forests, and excessive use of resources all threaten the animal world.
Returning empty bottles not only helps nature; at many machines, the refund can also be donated to charitable causes. By scanning a QR code, you can even support our zoo, contributing to animal care and conservation programs.
Small steps, big change
Thank you for thinking of us when returning your bottles! Let’s protect the environment entrusted to us together, while supporting our zoo’s conservation efforts through the return of deposit bottles.
