- The largest African antelope species! Adult bulls have a shoulder height of 170-190 cm and a body weight of 600-1000 kg. Both bulls and cows have strong, straight V-shaped horns, the lower 2/3 of which are twisted along a characteristic spiral line. It is a social game species, usually living in groups of 20-60
- The two sides of the body have vertical stripes, white in colour but very faint. As such stripes are usually found in forest-dwelling animals, it is likely that the eland’s ancestors also used to live in forested areas
