- The African elephant is the strongest and largest land mammal on Earth. The elephant herd
is matriarchal, consisting onl y of cows and their calfs, with young bulls being driven out of the family after they have r eached maturity. The head of the family is an older cow, the matriarch. After bathing, they use their trunks to cover the mselves with soil to protect them from insects and strong sun light. - Its most striking fe
ature is its nearly 2 m long trunk, which is the result of the upper lip and nose being fused together. Two tips at the end of the trunk also aid the feed ing process in addition to breathing and smelling. Their uppe r incisors are modified into s pecial tusks that grow for the rest of their lives. It is used for digging up food from below th e surface and for fighting.
